Oversupination
Foot Oversupination is the outward rolling of the foot during walking or running, where the weight shifts to the outer edge and the arch rises. While some supination is natural, excessive supination can lead to issues such as ankle sprains, shin splints, and knee or hip stress.
It’s important to address excessive supination with good supportive footwear, orthotic, insoles and targeted exercises to improve alignment and reduce the risk of injury.
Algeos offer a handful of Oversupination Insoles, each offering different levels of comfort and foot control.
Foot Oversupination, Underpronation and Foot Rolling
Foot Oversupination, also known as underpronation, is a foot alignment issue in which the foot rolls outwardly or doesn't roll inward enough when compared to the normal walking cycle. This may affect individuals in various ways:Increased Risk of Injuries: Over Supinators are less able to support natural absorption when walking and running due to their limited level of supination - resulting in increased injury vulnerability in the forms of ankle sprains, stress fractures, and shin splints.
Arch Pain: The high arches often accompanying supination can lead to pain or discomfort in the arch area because of poor weight distribution.
Decreased Stability: Without inward rolling, it can all lead to decreased stability, making it even hard for one to balance - hence a rise in the risk of falls.
Shoewear Patterns: Supinators usually have a rather quick wear on the outer edges of their shoes because their weight is concentrated on the lateral aspect of the foot.
Knee or/and Hip Pain: Foot oversupination can be the cause of knee and hip problems since it affects the whole leg alignment, which could induce knee pain, hip pain or even lower back ailments.
Diminished Shock Absorption: Individuals who supinate may encounter difficulties with shock absorption during physical activities, resulting in discomfort in the feet, knees and lower back.
Reduced Propulsion: Over Supinators may also fail to push off efficiently while running, which reduces efficiency and speed.
How is Oversupination prevented and treated?
To mitigate the effects of foot oversupination, individuals may find it advantageous to:Supporting Footwear: Selecting shoes that offer adequate cushioning and support, particularly designed for individuals who supinate, can assist in mitigating certain problems related to this condition.
Orthotics: Custom or over-the-counter inserts, provide increased arch support and cushioning to help distribute weight more evenly.Physical Therapy: A physiotherapist or Podiatrist can provide exercises to improve foot and ankle strength, stability, and gait mechanics. Regular stretching of the calf muscles and Achilles tendon may help improve foot flexibility and reduce discomfort.
Footwear Evaluation: Regular assessment of shoe wear patterns can aid in determining whether additional support is necessary. In certain instances, custom-made orthotics or modifications to footwear may be advised to address the specific biomechanical issues related to over supination.
Individuals with foot oversupination should seek medical consultation from a healthcare provider or a podiatrist so that specific treatment and preventative measures can be managed according to their needs and the severity of the supination.
