Technical Characteristics & Usage Advice

Permanent Bonding Contact Cement is a high-tack, solvent-based adhesive ideal for flexible bonding applications in orthotics, footwear, and manufacturing. It performs best when applied under controlled conditions with proper surface preparation.

  • Application: Apply evenly to both surfaces and allow to tack for 10–15 minutes before bonding. For less porous materials (e.g., PPC or PVC), allow slightly longer drying time.
  • Compatible Materials: EVA, Leather, Rubber, PU, Cork, PVC (Hardened), PPC, PE, Plastics, and Textiles.
  • Bond Strength: Achieves maximum adhesion after 24 hours; initial bond forms instantly on contact.
  • Heat Resistance: Excellent performance under post-bond sanding, grinding, and heat exposure.

Instructions for Use

  1. Prepare the Surfaces: Sand, grind, or roughen both materials to increase surface area and promote adhesion.
  2. Clean Thoroughly: Remove dust, grease, and fibres to ensure a clean bonding surface.
  3. Apply Adhesive: Spread a thin, even layer onto both surfaces using a brush or applicator.
  4. Dry Time: Allow to dry for approximately 10–15 minutes. This allows solvents to evaporate for a stronger final bond.
  5. Bond the Surfaces: Press the coated surfaces together firmly and hold for around 1 minute to achieve full contact.
  6. Final Strength: The bond reaches maximum strength within 24 hours.

Safety and Handling

  • Ventilation: Always use in a well-ventilated area to prevent inhalation of fumes.
  • Protective Equipment: Wear gloves, safety glasses, and protective clothing during use.
  • Storage: Keep containers tightly closed and store in a cool, dry location away from open flames and heat sources.
  • Disposal: Dispose of waste adhesive and contaminated materials according to local environmental regulations.

Contact Adhesive FAQ

What is Contact Adhesive?

Contact adhesive is a rubber-based glue known for creating an instant, strong, and permanent bond as soon as two coated surfaces are pressed together. Commonly made from polychloroprene (neoprene), these adhesives are widely used in shoemaking, woodworking, and manufacturing. Unlike other glues, they don’t require clamping — once the surfaces touch, the bond forms immediately.

Why is it Called “Contact” Adhesive?

The term “contact” comes from the way it bonds — the adhesive must be applied to both surfaces, allowed to dry to a tacky state, and then pressed together. The instant contact between the layers activates the bond, creating a strong, flexible connection. This makes it ideal for applications such as laminating, flooring, and footwear repair.

What Materials Can It Bond?

Contact adhesives are versatile and effective on a wide range of materials, including rubber, leather, foam, wood, metal, cork, plastics, and fabric. They are commonly used for shoe sole attachment, upholstery, laminating veneers, and general manufacturing tasks that require a durable, heat- and water-resistant bond.

How Do You Remove Contact Adhesive?

To remove cured contact adhesive, use heat, solvents, or mechanical methods depending on the substrate. Gently warming the area with a heat gun softens the adhesive, making it easier to scrape or peel away. For more stubborn residues, apply a suitable solvent (such as acetone or isopropyl alcohol), allow it to soak briefly, and then wipe clean.

What’s the Difference Between Contact Adhesive and Other Glues?

Unlike PVA or epoxy adhesives, contact cement bonds instantly upon contact, doesn’t require clamping, and maintains flexibility after curing. It is particularly suited for materials that experience bending, vibration, or heat exposure — making it ideal for footwear, leatherwork, and industrial applications.

Summary

Permanent Bonding Contact Cement delivers the power and reliability professionals demand for high-strength bonding. Its fast, clean, and flexible formula ensures dependable adhesion across a wide variety of materials — perfect for footwear, orthotics, upholstery, and manufacturing. With excellent heat resistance, professional-grade durability, and safe, toluene-free formulation, it’s a workshop essential for anyone who values quality, efficiency, and long-term performance.

This glue is amazing. I am fitting soles on my shoes due to a fall leaving my leg shorter so shoes have to be built up and this has been the only glue that does the job.
  • Excellent

It does what youd expect. It's very effective and easy to thin if needs be. But the great thing is actually algeos. The delivery is fast and free over a certain amount. It cant be faulted. I am always confident my products will arrive fast and if there is ever an issue their customer service is outstanding
