EVA Foam Sheets: Properties and Applications

Algeos Australia supplies a comprehensive range of EVA foam sheets, engineered to meet the needs of multiple industries across the country. Renowned for its durability, flexibility and easy customisation, our EVA range supports everything from orthotic and prosthetic manufacturing to footwear, marine, craft and sports applications. This overview explores the key properties of Algeos’ EVA foam - including density, thermoforming performance and cutting versatility - and highlights the many ways it’s used across Australian industries.

EVA Foam Sheet Density

One of the standout features of Algeos EVA foam sheets is their broad density range. EVA (ethylene-vinyl acetate) is known for being lightweight yet resilient, and its density determines both firmness and flexibility.

Lower-density EVA foam provides excellent cushioning, ideal for orthotic insoles, padding for orthotic devices, and soft packaging materials. In contrast, higher-density grades offer greater structural integrity and firmness, making them suitable for prosthetic components, shoe base plates, and industrial applications where rigidity and stability are essential.

Thermoforming EVA Sheets

EVA foam’s thermoforming capability is one of its most valuable properties. When heated, EVA becomes flexible and easy to mould into custom shapes and contours — ideal for creating bespoke orthotic inserts, protective gear, or ergonomic components. Once cooled, it retains its new form, offering precision and comfort that can be tailored to individual requirements.

Typical EVA Thermoforming Temperatures

EVA Density (Shore A)ThicknessTemperature Range (°C)Exposure Time (Seconds)
A25–A357.5mm75–10030–60
A25–A3515mm100–13030–90
A507.5mm85–11030–80
A5015mm110–14030–120
A657.5mm90–12030–100
A6515mm120–15030–140

Note: Heating times and temperatures should be adjusted based on material thickness, sheet size, and the type of heating system used. Thinner sheets require lower temperatures and shorter heating times. Direct infrared heating is more aggressive than air-circulating ovens, so it’s best to test in stages. EVA copolymers should never exceed 200°C to prevent degradation or acetic acid release (which can cause a vinegar-like odour).

EVA Sheet Cutting and Shaping

EVA foam is exceptionally easy to shape, cut, and machine — whether you’re using manual tools or CNC technology. Its versatility makes it ideal for precision manufacturing and creative design alike. From orthotic fabrication and prosthetic liners to custom props, cosplay costumes, and sports padding, EVA foam can be tailored to almost any form or function.

Algeos EVA Foam Conversion Capabilities

At Algeos Australia, we offer in-house conversion services, including splitting and knife cutting to your exact specifications. Our advanced equipment allows us to supply EVA in a range of thicknesses, sizes, and composite formats - such as EVA bonded to Poron® or dual-layer EVA/EVA combinations.

If you need a custom configuration, we can manufacture it locally to suit your production requirements. Learn more about our in-house manufacturing and conversion options via our EVA cutting and manufacturing services.

Applications of EVA Foam Sheets

The versatility of Algeos EVA foam means it’s used in an impressive variety of industries and applications across Australia, including:

  • Footwear: Commonly used in midsoles, outsoles, and orthotic inserts for its lightweight, shock-absorbing properties. Ideal for athletic, casual, and medical-grade footwear.
  • Orthotics and Prosthetics: A trusted material for custom orthotic insoles, heel lifts, and prosthetic interface components, delivering comfort, durability, and easy modification.
  • Packaging: Provides superior cushioning and protection for fragile items, electronics, glassware, and precision tools during transport and storage.
  • Sports and Recreation: Used in protective gear, helmet padding, yoga mats, and flotation devices due to its impact absorption and buoyancy.
  • Marine and Boating: EVA foam’s water resistance and durability make it ideal for deck pads, boat flooring, and marine flotation products.
  • Arts, Crafts, and Cosplay: Easily shaped, heat-formed, and painted, EVA foam is a favourite among designers, prop makers, and hobbyists for creating costumes and stage pieces.
  • Industrial and Automotive: Used in gaskets, seals, and vibration-damping components where resilience and flexibility are essential.
