EVA Foam Sheets: Properties and Applications

Algeos offers a comprehensive range of EVA foam sheets, offering a myriad of solutions across diverse industries. This overview delves into the properties of Algeos' EVA foam, including density, thermoforming capabilities and ease of shaping, while exploring its wide-ranging applications.

EVA Foam Sheet Density
One of the defining characteristics of Algeos' EVA foam is its diverse range of densities. EVA (ethylene-vinyl acetate) foam is known for its lightweight yet durable nature, making it suitable for various applications. The density of EVA foam determines its firmness and flexibility, with options ranging from low to high density. Low-density EVA foam provides excellent cushioning properties, ideal for applications such as insoles, padding for orthotic devices and cushioned packaging materials. On the other hand, high-density EVA foam offers enhanced structural support, making it suitable for applications requiring rigidity, such as prosthetic components and industrial gaskets.

Thermoforming EVA Sheets
Another noteworthy property of Algeos' EVA foam is its thermoforming capability. EVA foam can be easily moulded and shaped using heat, allowing for the creation of customised components and intricate designs. This thermoforming ability makes EVA foam highly versatile, as it can be adapted to fit specific shapes and contours. Whether it's forming bespoke orthotic insoles or crafting ergonomic handles for tools, the thermoforming properties of EVA foam enable precise customisation to meet individual requirements.

EVA Foam Sheet Heating Temperatures:
The ideal temperature for thermo-moulding depends on the material thickness and hardness. The standard principles would be:

EVA Density (Shore A)ThicknessTemperature Range (°C)Exposure Time (Seconds)
A25-A357.5mm75-10030-60
A25-A3515mm100-13030-90
A507.5mm85-11030-80
A5015mm110-14030-120
A657.5mm90-12030-100
A6515mm120-15030-140

It is important to indicate the above mentioned conditions should be adjusted according to the following patterns:
  • The thinner the material the lower the temperature or the exposure timing. The only effective way to determine heating times based on variable thickness and sheet size, is to test in stages based on the above guidelines.
  • The heat source is also important; a direct infrared radiation will be much more aggressive than heating a piece with circulating air system, meaning the temperature should be adjusted accordingly. Again, test in stages as per above.
  • In general, EVA copolymers should not be extruded hotter than 200°C since degradation may occur. Degradation products include the elimination of acetic acid, which can account for a “vinegar” odour and corrosion of some materials.
EVA Sheet Cutting

Foam sheeting offers ease of shaping and cutting, facilitating effortless customization for various applications. Whether using traditional cutting methods or advanced CNC machinery, EVA foam can be accurately cut to size, allowing for intricate designs and precise fitting. This ability to cut to shape makes EVA foam sheeting suitable for a wide range of applications across industries. From crafting intricate cosplay costumes and props to creating durable protective padding for sports equipment, the versatility of EVA foam sheeting knows no bounds.
Algeos EVA Foam Conversion Facilities

Algeos can laminate, split and knife cut sheet materials of your choice, supplied in several thicknesses, sizes and lamination variations to suit your manufacturing requirements. If you need something more specific that we don’t already stock, such as Poron on EVA or EVA on EVA, we can work with you to develop it.
With our own in-house cutting and splitting capabilities on-site, we are able to manufacture and convert materials to almost any specification. See Algeos Manufacturing Services
