Description

DARCO OrthoWedge® Shoe – Forefoot Offloading Shoe

The DARCO OrthoWedge® Shoe is clinically proven to significantly reduce weight-bearing pressure on the forefoot. This targeted pressure relief promotes faster healing following forefoot surgery, trauma, or when managing wounds and ulcerations located beneath the metatarsal heads or toes.

The patented wedge-shaped sole shifts pressure to the midfoot and heel, reducing load on vulnerable forefoot areas. This makes it a highly effective tool in post-operative care and diabetic foot management across Australian hospitals and wound care centres.

Indications for Use

  • Post-surgical recovery (e.g. after bunion, hammer toe, or tailor’s bunion correction)
  • Forefoot trauma or fractures
  • Wounds or ulcerations beneath the metatarsal heads or toes
  • Diabetic foot care requiring forefoot pressure offloading
  • Any condition requiring forefoot off-loading

Key Features & Benefits

  • 15° Wedge Sole: Biomechanically shifts weight away from the forefoot to aid healing.
  • Clinically Proven Pressure Reduction:
    • Up to 57% reduction in forefoot (metatarsal head) pressure
    • 75% reduction in great toe pressure
    • Peak pressure drop from 19 PSI → 8 PSI (forefoot)
    • Peak pressure drop from 17 PSI → 4 PSI (great toe)
  • Square Toe Design: Protects toes (especially when K-wires are in place) and provides a universal Left/Right fit.
  • Secure Ankle Strap: Prevents heel slippage and minimises friction.
  • Removable Forefoot Closure: Offers stability without buckle pressure.
  • Zoned Outsole: Aggressive tread under midfoot maximises grip where it's needed most.
  • High-Padding Insole: Double-thickness cushioning for patient comfort. Fully removable to accommodate the DARCO PegAssistâ„¢ PQ Series insole for custom wound off-loading.
  • Optional Toe Cap: Available separately for added protection.

Compatible Accessories

  • DARCO PegAssistâ„¢ PQ Series Insole – for precise off-loading of ulcers and wounds

Small (S)AU 4.5 – 6
Medium (M)AU 6.5 – 8
Large (L)AU 8.5 – 10
Extra Large (XL)AU 10.5 – 12.5

Clinical Application

The OrthoWedge® Shoe helps reduce step count naturally due to its off-loading profile, yet still enables safe ambulation when required. It is especially effective in managing diabetic foot ulcers under the forefoot and toes, helping reduce risk of infection and promoting healing without compromising mobility.

Care Instructions

  • Wipe clean with a damp cloth and mild soap as needed.
  • Allow to air dry; avoid exposure to high heat or direct sunlight.
  • Inspect regularly for wear and replace as clinically indicated.
